Journal Entry: Thu Nov 9, 2006, 12:09 AM
In all the time I've had this ID, I've never written a journal entry. Until now. And this is only to advertise my new project: a poetry class under the name of ~Professor-Flare. It's my hope to design the class from a beginner's level onward, following (what I feel is) the best progression of acquired poetic skills. Whether you're just starting with poetry or have been writing it for a while, the class should have something to offer you. All the information is in the syllabus there, so if you're interested, please check it out :)

Devious Information

  • Current Age: 23
  • Current Residence: Sacramento
  • Favourite poet or writer: Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde
  • Favourite game: What, this week?
  • Favourite gaming platform: PC, PSOne, SNES
  • Personal Quote: "Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers." -- TS Eliot
  • Tools of the Trade: Mead College-Ruled One-Subject Notebook, Photoshop 7.0, Illustrator 9.0

Yeah, they are different. But it's a quote I like to pull as a joke. I think I saw its article linked next to "There is no escape from meter, only mastery", which seems to be exalting well-written metered poetry over well-written free verse.

Anyway. Thanks for the quotes =p

"Free verse is writing presented as "verse" that does not employ traditional metrical systems. Beyond this bare statement no further generalization can be made."
- Stephen Adams, Poetic Designs

"I would be as satisfied to play tennis with the net down as to write verse with no verse form set to stay me."
- Robert Frost

"Sustained metrical design does not exist in free verse poems, of course, but often some meter is employed briefly for effect."
- Mary Oliver, Rules of the Dance

There is as much a division between free verse and metrical verse as there is between the accentual system and the syllabic system. They can be combined, they can weave in and out of one another. Neither is wrong. But they are different.

"And as for vers libre, we conclude that it is not defined by absence of pattern or absence of rhyme, for other verse is without these; that it is not defined by non-existence of metre, since even the worst verse can be scanned; and we conclude that the division between Conservative Verse and vers libre does not exist, for there is only good verse, bad verse, and chaos."

Depends on what dark side you're referring to.
